Summertime

Tomorrow is the longest day of the year. Yep, it is the first day of summer. And nothing reminds me of summer more than that classic song from “Porgy and Bess” than “Summertime”.  With the music composed by George Gershwin in 1934 and the lyrics written by DuBose Heyward, it has become a favourite of people around the world. And not without reason, especially when it is sung by someone like Ella Fitzgerald. Her voice brings a hauntingly beautiful rendition to what is already a powerfully moving song.

Of course there are other songs that remind me of summer, such as Nat King Cole’s “Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer” and also “Sunshine and Lollipops” — this is despite it was released in the Fall of 1963 (I believe that this is correct although I may be wrong about the date). These songs just make me feel good, and whenever I hear them, I want to crank up the sound and sing along. Cranking up the sound is probably a good thing because most people ask me to stop when I start to sing.

But there is something special about “Summertime”. For me, it really speaks to my heart and soul.

But as much as it speaks to me, it cannot calm the storms of my heart. All of the songs that I have mentioned make me feel good, but only for a little while. And there is only one Person who can bring true summertime into my life. That is the Lord Jesus Christ, Who not only calms my soul, but brings me new life. He brings me a “Summertime” that will last forever in His Kingdom with all of those who have put their trust in Him and have believed in Him as Lord and Saviour.  May God bring the richest of His blessings into your life.

About faithfullyhis

My name is Charles Quail and I am a retired Baptist pastor who lives in Dunnville,a small town southeast of Hamilton, Ontario. I also write a weekly column for our local newspaper, The Sachem. It is a column that I have been writing for about eight years. I am married and have two grown daughters. My best buddy was my dog Max, who is now chasing bunny rabbits in sky. I miss him terribly. My reason for wanting to write a blog is friends have told me that this is the next logical step in my writing career. My hope and prayer is that many will be both challenged and blessed by what I write.
